Mescal Olivia Hall Dicks, 89, the tenth child of the late Clifton Hall and Bessie Turner Hall was born in Johnston, SC on July 8, 1926. “Meck” was the tom-boy of the family, she would hang on her heels from a limb just as big as any of the boys. She was her daddy’s shadow and followed him everywhere he went, especially to the blacksmith shop, she would turn the handle for the bellows all day long. She was married to the late Edward Alexander “Geechie” Dicks on February 5, 1943 in Barnwell, SC.
Mescal attended school in Johnston and Dunbarton; she was a member of the Williston First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for over 50 years. Mescal was a member of the Over-the-Hill Band where she loved to sing and entertained many with her yodeling. She retired as a supervisor from Williston Manufacturing Company also having worked for Harding and Williams at Savannah River Plant in the 1950’s & early 60’s and Sunbeam in Denmark. Mescal loved the outdoors, flowers, country music and swinging in her swing on the side porch.
Survivors include a daughter, Faye D. (Richard E.) Lindell; a son, Raymond Edward (Deborah) Dicks all of Williston; grandchildren, Bryan (Joy) Lindell, Benji (Angela) Lindell, Chris (Lou) Lindell, Miriam Seader, Jesse (Tabatha) Dicks; great grandchildren, Jaimie (Paul) Sullivan, Tori Lindell (Dustin Shook), Jered Lindell, Alec Hook, Kieran Hays, Christina Garrett, Lillian Dicks, Caiden Dicks, Brooke Lindell, Caleb Lindell, Derek (Taylor) Dyches, Bryanna Dyches; great, great grandchildren, Olivia Jane Sullivan, Madden Foster Shook and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Mary, Rose, Bessie, Edna, Gladys, Weedie; brothers, Jake, Woody, Elmer, Bill, Leon; granddaughter, Rachel Dicks and great granddaughter, Rachael Black.
Funeral services will be held three p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at the Williston First Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen Burnette and Reverend Jimmy Hanf officiating; burial will be in the Williston Cemetery. The family will receive friends from two p.m. until the time of the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be given in Mescal’s memory to The Williston Cemetery, P.O. Box 367, Williston, SC 29853. Mescal passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016.
